Meeting Disney characters is one of the most memorable experiences at Walt Disney World. From hugging Mickey Mouse to chatting with a Disney princess, these magical moments are so much more than just photo ops. But how do you make your Disney character meet and greet extra special?
Here are 15 fun and creative ways to interact with Disney characters at Disney World that will make your trip unforgettable.
How To Interact With Characters at Disney World
There are two types of characters at Disney World – speaking characters and non-speaking characters. These are typically called “face” characters (characters who have human faces and can have a conversation) and “fur” characters (characters in face costumes). All characters will communicate – some will use words, and others gestures!
1. Learn Their Catchphrases
If a character you are meeting has a specific catchphrase they are known for, say it! Say “Howdy, partner!” to Woody or “To infinity and beyond!” to Buzz Lightyear. Say “mirror, mirror, on the wall” to the Evil Queen and “best day ever” to Rapunzel. Characters love when guests join in their world.

2. Wear Themed Outfits or Disneybounds
Wearing a shirt, hat, or Disneybound inspired by your favorite character can spark adorable reactions. Stitch might get extra mischievous if he spots you wearing Stitch gear and the princesses will LOVE when your little one is dressed like them.
We went to go meet Chewbacca and Jen was wearing these ears. Chewy made her take them off before we could go and give him a hug! He was pretty annoyed at us – but it was so fun and memorable!

3. Ask Fun Questions
Don’t just smile for the camera—talk to the characters. Ask Ariel about her favorite human treasure or ask Anna how Olaf is doing. Ask Mary Poppins what supercalifragilisticsexpialadocious means and ask Snow White if she still eats apples! Any kind of question related to the character’s story will make for a memorable interaction.

4. Give a Compliment
Telling Belle you love her gown or letting Donald know he’s your #1 duck adds a sweet, personal touch to your interaction. Complimenting a character’s outfit is an easy way to interact with them if you aren’t sure what to say!
When we met Daisy Duck in Animal Kingdom we were telling her we liked some of the designs on her outfit. She then pointed out a pin on the lanyard that was similar to her outfit! It was a fun and unexpected interaction.

5. Bring a Small Prop or Plush
Show Rapunzel a mini Pascal or hand Darth Vader a tiny lightsaber (if you’re brave enough!). Characters love to play along. They especially love it if you have a small toy of THEM!

6. Play Into Their Story
Pretend to shiver when meeting Elsa, bow or curtsey to Cinderella, or salute Captain America, and act concerned when you see Storm Troopers —it makes the experience more immersive. Characters LOVE it when you know their story. This is also an easy way to interact with roaming characters who happen to be walking by! (Pro tip – you will find a ton of roaming characters in Galaxy’s Edge.)

7. Ask for a Fun Pose
Instead of the usual smile, ask characters for a pose idea: claws with Sulley, a royal wave with Aurora, or a superhero stance with Spider-Man. If you aren’t sure what kind of pose to do, ask the character! They love to do different things with guests and they will help create a fantastic photo memory! You can also ask to take a selfie with a character.

8. Share a Joke
Goofy, Chip, and Dale especially love silly humor. A quick knock-knock joke can get big laughs and silly photos. Of course, the Monsters Inc characters love to collect laughs, so be sure to bring your best joke to meet Sulley!

9. Try a High-Five or Dance Move
For kids who are shy, a high-five, blow a kiss, fist bump, or even a little dance can help break the ice. You can also try playing “rock, paper, scissors” with a character!
One thing we think is really special about Disney World is that if you hug a character, the character will NEVER end the hug first. Your child (or you!) get to hug the character as long as you need!

10. Celebrate a Special Occasion
If it’s your birthday, first Disney trip, or even a graduation, tell the characters. They’ll often make the moment extra magical.
11. Bring an Autograph Book (or Something Unique)
Characters can sign hats, picture frames, and photo mats. These autographs make great keepsakes beyond the traditional book. Make sure you bring an appropriate pen for your item. We have a 15 unique autograph ideas here.

12. Ask About Their Friends
Ask Minnie how Mickey is doing or ask Donald where Daisy is. You can ask Aladdin if he’s seen the genie lately and Jasmine how Raja is doing. You’ll get playful, in-character answers every time.
This is also a really simple way to help prep your kids to interact with the characters!

13. Let the Kids Take the Lead
If you’re traveling with little ones, encourage them to talk, hug, or ask questions first. If your child is shy, don’t worry! Disney characters are amazing at bringing shy kids out of their shells.
Even if your child never fully interacts the way you imagined, keep trying with new characters! The first time Katie’s oldest saw Goofy at Chef Mickey’s she hid under the table. But Mickey and Minnie were fine! You just never know what will happen.

Enjoy the Magic in the Moment
Sometimes the best interactions happen when you simply let the characters guide the moment. Each one has their own unique personality, and the surprises are often the most magical part. Don’t rush through your meet and greets. These interactions are more than just photos—they’re memories your family will treasure forever.
