If you get motion sickness it is important to know what rides you can and cannot go on at Walt Disney World. You absolutely do NOT want to spend an entire day nauseous, vomiting, or back at your hotel room in bed!
Jen and Dave both deal with motion sickness. We know that terrible feeling you get after riding a ride you shouldn’t have (or riding in the car on a winding road or whale watching on a windy day on the ocean or…).
We have rounded up the rides that are known to cause sickness and noted if they are able to ride it. We have noted any tips to help decrease the chance of motion sickness. For some of the rides we have noted what exactly can trigger nausea.
If we have not listed a ride below, it’s because we have no issues riding it!
To give you a bit of context on things that make Jen and Dave sick:
- Neither one can do rides where you watch a screen
- Neither one can do rides that spin
- Dave can’t do rides that go backwards
- Jen can do roller coasters, Dave cannot
Magic Kingdom Rides
Ride With Caution
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – standard roller coaster
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Space Mountain – Jen can handle this one, Dave cannot
- TRON Lightcycle Run
- Peter Pan’s Flight – ride facing forward
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin – the one with motion sickness is in charge of the rotating device
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – bouncy
Do Not Ride
- Astro Orbiter – spins
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant – spins
- Mad Tea Party – spins
- The Magic Carpets of Aladdin – spins
- Prince Charming Regal Carrousel – spins
Thankfully most of these rides are in one section of the Magic Kingdom. If you cannot take your kids on these rides avoid them! Jen and I had literally never seen some of these rides in person until we were adults – our parents avoided them so we were never disappointed that we couldn’t ride them.
Epcot Rides
Ride With Caution
- Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
- Journey into Imagination with Figment – a bit jerky
- Test Track – quick stops, a little jerky
Do Not Ride
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- Mission: SPACE – don’t ride either one
- Soarin’
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Ride With Caution
- Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith – rollercoaster with inversions
- Slinky Dog Dash
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – if screens make you sick, close your eyes at the end and don’t watch the beginning series. Jen could handle this one by doing those two things.
- Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
- Toy Story Mania! – the one with motion sickness is in charge of the rotation
Do Not Ride
- Alien Swirling Saucers – spins
- Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- Star Tours: The Adventures Continue
Animal Kingdom Rides
Ride With Caution
- Dinosaur – extremely jerky
- Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain – Jen can handle this ride but Dave cannot. This has a section of moving backwards in the dark.
Do Not RIde
- Avatar Flight of Passage
- Triceratop Spin – spins
If you are unsure about a certain ride you can often find YouTube videos showing what you will experience. If you get mild motion sickness and want to ride some of the more intense rides we suggest bringing something like dramamine with just in case.
Items to help prevent or treat motion sickness:
We have rounded up some of the best products for motion sickness treatment and prevention.
1. Dramamine
This classic motion sickness medication has been around for forever – thats because it works! Throw this in your backpack or pocket
2. Motion Sickness Patch
A patch that goes behind your ear is super effective for many people in preventing motion sickness!
3. Motion Sickness Bracelets
Jen and Dave have tried this with varying degrees of success. These seem to be more effective for kids.
4. Bonine
This is an extremely popular and effective chewable tablet that helps with prevention and treatment of nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and general motion sickness.
5. Herbal Inhaler
This blend of herbs gives natural drug-free relief for nausea and motion sickness. You can either inhale the scent or rub on.
6. Ginger Chews
Ginger provides natural relief for an upset stomach. These are good to have on hand at home, too!
7. Electrode Stimulator Band
FDA approved electrode stimulator bands are newer on the market and seem very promising. We haven’t tried this style of motion sickness treatment yet but Jen is seriously looking into this. If it works as promised it is well worth the money.
