9 Unique Things to Know About Living with the Land in EPCOT

If you’ve ever strolled through EPCOT and skipped Living with the Land, I’m here to tell you… you’re missing out! Sure, it might not have a high-speed launch or a popular mascot, but this boat ride is packed with Disney history, hidden details, and some seriously cool behind-the-scenes magic.

Next time you’re in The Land pavilion, make sure you hop on — and impress your family with these fun facts while you float through!

1. It’s One of EPCOT’s Original Attractions

Living with the Land opened on October 1, 1982, the same day EPCOT Center officially welcomed guests. It was originally called Listen to the Land, and while the ride has seen a few updates since then, it’s still one of the park’s opening day classics.

In fact, check out the mailbox in the farmhouse scene—it’s got the number 82, a nod to 1982, the year EPCOT opened. Little details like this are pure Disney magic!

Spaceship Earth is another current day attraction that also was open during EPCOT’s opening day in 1982.

2. You Can Eat the Food You See on the Ride

Those veggies, fruits, and herbs growing in the greenhouses aren’t just for show. Disney uses the produce and seafood from Living with the Land in several EPCOT restaurants, including Garden Grill and Sunshine Seasons (both inside The Land pavilion). Talk about fresh, farm-to-table dining!

3. There are hidden Mickey’s everywhere

As you cruise through “Living with the Land” at EPCOT, keep an eye out for those sneaky Hidden Mickeys that Disney Imagineers love to sprinkle around. You might spot Mickey’s iconic shape in stuff like plants, tools, or even wall patterns in the greenhouses and beyond.

These fun little “Easter eggs” make the ride a blast for anyone who loves a good scavenger hunt. This is an especially fun activity for kids who might not love a boat ride about plants! We make a game out of this with the younger kids to see who can find the most hidden Mickey’s.

4. The Greenhouses Grow Plants in Super Creative Ways

Sure, there’s traditional soil planting, but you’ll also spot hydroponics, vertical growing systems, and even plants growing upside down. Disney’s horticulture team experiments with sustainable growing methods, and this ride lets you see it all up close. This is fun to look at even if you aren’t into gardening.

5. The Crops Include Some Pretty Unexpected Plants

Beyond the familiar tomatoes and lettuce, you’ll find crops like dragon fruit, lemongrass, vanilla, and even Mickey-shaped pumpkins. They also grow massive gourds and exotic fruits you probably won’t spot in your local grocery store. During the Flower and Garden Festival this attraction highlights edible flowers throughout the ride!

6. The Ride Has a Behind-the-Scenes Tour

If you love the greenhouse section, you can book the Behind the Seeds tour, a walking tour that takes you into the greenhouses and labs you pass by on the ride. It’s one of EPCOT’s most affordable tours that ranges from $39-$49.

This tour lets you see the four greenhouses and fish farm that are in the Living With The Land tour! You will get to learn about the hybrid fish (tilapia, catfish, striped bass, and shrimp), see the latest growing techniques – including some that don’t use soil, see huge fruits and vegetables, and view unusual plants from around the world.

We recommend experiencing the attraction prior to the tour.

7. The Greenhouses Are Home to Aquaculture, Too

In addition to plants, Living with the Land houses tanks full of fish, tilapia, and freshwater shrimp. Disney uses these aquaculture systems to study sustainable fish farming and manage water resources within the pavilion.

8. The Greenhouses Glow at Night and at Christmas

If you happen to catch a ride during EPCOT’s evening hours, you’ll notice the greenhouses lit up with soft, glowing lights. It’s a totally different vibe at night, and the lighting adds a peaceful, dreamy feel to the experience. This ride also gets decked out for the holiday season, making it extra special in the evening!

Keep in mind that the lines to this attraction get VERY long during evening hours at Christmastime. People love to see the twinkling Christmas lights at night. You may want to book a Lightning Lane during this time (an option you would probably never do at any other time of year!).

9. It’s a Great Spot to Cool Off and Recharge

Pro tip: With the exception of Christmastime, Living with the Land is usually a walk-on or has a very short wait time, making it a perfect mid-afternoon escape from the Florida heat. Plus, the boat ride is long enough to rest your feet but short enough to fit easily between Lightning Lanes and snack breaks.

This is a great ride if half of your family is going to do Soarin and you want something to do while you wait as they are located in the same building. The Land building also has restrooms, a nice quick service option, and plenty of seating options. If you find yourself in this building for any reason, hop on Living With The Land!
