What To Pack For Disney World – Essentials For Every Month

Comfortable Shoes

This is an absolute necessity, as you will be doing a lot of walking. In fact, you will be walking an average of 8 miles per day at Disney. The best shoes are ones that are comfortable walking shoes that are not brand new.

We recommend sneakers or tennis shoes for your daily footwear. You will want to choose sneakers that will keep your feet cool during the hot days and will allow space for your feet to swell a little bit with all the walking and heat.

Rain Jacket or Rain Poncho

Florida is known for pop up rain showers in the summer months and rainy days during hurricane season. Because Florida is a peninsula, rain is likely to make an appearance during your stay.

Some seasons are drier than others, but we do recommend bringing some sort of rain jacket and having it on hand in case the weather forecast unexpectedly changes during your stay.

We have an entire post dedicated to the best rain gear for your trip to Walt Disney World. It will help you make the best decision for you and your family.

Disney Graphic T-shirt

To us, this is an essential! Honestly, you need to have one in your suitcase. You are spending thousands of dollars on this vacation – don’t skimp out on this one!

Make sure each person in your family has a Disney themed shirt for your vacation. We have a number of posts with our favorite Disney clothing:

15 Graphic Tees for Women
9 Disney Villain Shirts
Disney clothes and gear for teens and tweens
Haunted Mansion products

Sun Protection

Depending upon your sensitivity to the sun, this may mean a baseball cap, a sun hat, a long sleeve sun protection shirt, or sunscreen. Sun protection is necessary year round in tropical Florida.

Pajamas

No matter what time of year you go, bring your pjs! We love these for women.

Packing for Personal Preferences and Schedule

You will want to keep in mind your itinerary and personal preferences as you plan your clothing for your vacation. A couple things to keep in mind as you are making your packing list:

  • Do you get cold in hotel rooms? Bring slippers or socks for your hotel room as well as cozy lounge clothes.
  • Do you have dining reservations at a nicer restaurant? Make sure to bring appropriate clothing, like a dress or collared shirt.
  • Do you plan on spending time at Disney Springs? You may want to bring more “date” clothes.
  • Are you attending any special events at your resort or the parks? Keep clothing attire for that event in mind.

Ok lets jump into season specific packing. We will be giving you an overview of the type of clothes that you should plan on packing.

Florida weather can change quickly and we recommend you checking the forecast a day or two before you leave in case you need to make any last minute additions to your packing list. (All temperatures listed below are in Fahrenheit.)

What to Wear to Walt Disney World in January

January weather in Orlando is comfortably cool. The high temperature is in the low 70s, while the low temperature is right around 50. As far as clothing goes, think layers! You will be cool in the morning while you wait for the rope to drop. As the evening goes on temperatures will naturally dip again.

We definitely recommend having a backpack with you in January as you will likely want to take off one of your layers in the afternoon. Our favorite backpack options for Disney World are listed here.

  1. T-shirts
  2. Long sleeve shirts (We like this long sleeve shirt from Amazon for women)
  3. Sweatshirts, fleece jacket, or cardigan for layering. This one looks perfect.
  4. Several pairs of long pants or jeans
  5. One or two pairs of shorts
  6. Socks. Darn Tough brand is our favorite – made in the USA and a lifetime guarantee!
  7. Hat and Gloves – Bring something warm, but you don’t need snow gear. Something like this!
  8. Packable blanket (optional) – This is handy while waiting for and watching parades and for sitting outside while eating. Get a small but mighty blanket like this!

You will probably not be doing much swimming in January, but do check the weather before you go in case you have unseasonably warm weather.

Weather in Orlando in February is in the mid 70s for highs and mid 50s for lows. Think “fall” weather. Similar to January, you need to think in terms of layers. The weather will start to warm up enough to make swimming an option, especially towards the end of the month.

  1. Several T-shirts, one tank top
  2. Long sleeve shirts
  3. Sweatshirts, fleece jacket, or cardigans for layering
  4. Several pairs of pants or jeans
  5. A couple pairs of shorts

  2. A couple long sleeve shirts

What to Wear to Walt Disney World in April

April is when things start to heat up in Florida. Highs are in the mid 80s and low temperatures are in the low to mid 60s. If you are not used to heat in April, it may feel hot to you. Keep this in mind as you are packing!

Consider packing lightweight clothes in cooler fabrics. Stay away from heavy fabrics, such as denim shorts. We recommend packing:

  1. T-shirts and tank tops
  2. Shorts (this post has a ton of shorts options for women of all shapes)
  3. Lightweight long sleeve sweatshirt or jacket
  4. One or two lightweight long sleeve tops
  5. One pair of pants
  6. Sandals or flip flops
  7. Swimsuits

We have a post that goes more in depth into what to wear during the month of April.

What to Wear to Walt Disney World in May

May can definitely be considered hot. Temperatures in May average around 88 degrees, and overnight temps only drop down to 70. The humidity is starting to rise and it will feel hot! When you are in the parks you will be wearing summer clothes and long sleeves are not necessary (unless you have dining reservations and tend to get cool in air conditioning).

It is important to consider the type of fabric your clothes are made out of. If you are choosing to wear a Disney graphic tee, make sure it is made of breathable fabric.

You can find cute, comfortable athletic or camping clothes that will be perfect for your Disney trip in summer! We recommend packing:

  1. Tee shirts
  2. Tank tops
  3. Shorts
  4. Sandals
  5. Swimsuits
  6. Lightweight long sleeve for hotel or restaurant
  7. One pair of pants/jeans/leggings

We have a post that goes more in depth into what to wear during the month of May.

What to Wear to Disney World in June

June, the start of summer! And it will feel like summer in Orlando. High temperatures are close to 90 and low temperatures are mid 70s. Humidity is definitely starting to creep up. It WILL rain in the afternoons!

Our packing list for the summer months is short, because the goal is to stay cool. You do not need extra clothes! When choosing clothes, think breathable and moisture wicking fabrics. It is worth the extra cost to pack a couple dri-fit shirts for each person in your group. We recommend packing:

  1. T-shirts
  2. Tank tops
  3. Shorts (or skorts, if you are not comfortable with shorts)
  4. Sandals or flip flops
  5. Swimsuits
  6. Lightweight long sleeve or pants for air conditioned spaces

Sandals at Walt Disney World

As we mentioned earlier, we recommend wearing sneakers while walking around the Disney Parks. That being said, many people do opt for sandals for their daily footwear.

Sandals dry faster should you find yourself in the rain and your feet will stay cooler. If you choose to wear sandals in the park we recommend choosing an athletic style sandal – you can see a few of our recommended options here.

Crocs are a good combination between sandals and shoes. Many people swear by this option! Crocs have fun Disney styles available as well as charms for your croc clogs! The crocs brand does have water resistant sneakers as well that are extremely comfortable.
